The Joint Coalition of Substance Abuse Agencies of Nassau County was established in response to a growing need for organizations to unite together to respond to the needs of county residents affected by substance use and abuse. Presently, 27 non-profit organizations comprise the membership of this coalition representing every community throughout Nassau County. Our agencies network with one another to create a cohesive, collaborative, and cost-effective response to the critical problem of drug abuse.

Many of our organizations, despite profound fiscal restraints, have persevered for over three decades. Our coalition's overall goal is to address the substance abuse problem in our communities through treatment and prevention services. Of equal significance is our mission to maintain the integrity of a strong system that will grow and respond to the complex needs of those we serve. Over the years, our coalition has worked diligently to educate policy makers, elected officials, and community members as to the critical implications of substance abuse. Additionally, we have joined to advocate for those in critical need of help.

Member agencies of the coalition share a common belief that the provision of quality, comprehensive services to the population is essential. Our commitment towards this goal is unwavering as we move into the 21st Century.

This belief was conveyed to community members, as well as our local legislators at a legislative breakfast on Sept. 25. The breakfast was held at Adelphi University in Garden City. Local officials present included Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, chairperson of Assembly Committee on Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Assemblyman Steven Labriola, County Legislator Edward Ward, County Legislator Dennis Dunne, as well as representatives from the office of Senator Dean Skelos, Senator Charles Fuschillo, and Assemblymen James Darcy, Thomas Alfano, Assemblywoman Maureen O'Connell, and Legislator Francis Becker. Commissioner of the Nassau County Department of Drug and Alcohol, Briding Newell, and Director of OASAS' local field office, John Heslin were also in attendance, along with over 225 board and staff members of the drug treatment field.

Also at this meeting, the members of the Joint Coalition of Substance Abuse Agencies acknowledged those board members and employees who have demonstrated their commitment to the benefits of treatment and have contributed 10 years or more service.
