The Oct. 9 Gary Farley Memorial 5 Kilometer Run was the 15th event in Long Island Track & Field's 20-race KeySpan Energy Grand Prix of Road Races, and more than 400 enthusiastic runners were on hand to participate. When the dust at Cedar Creek Park in Wantagh had settled, Kieran Kelly of Massapequa, returning to the local racing scene after a long layoff due to injury, had captured second place in the 50-54 age group. The 51-year-old Massapequa speedster crossed the finish line in 18 minutes, 21 seconds. Kelly is a member of the Greater Long Island Running Club and competes for GLIRC's Men's Racing Team.
The run was hosted by the Nassau Police Running Club in memory of Police Officer Gary Farley, with all proceeds donated to the special scholarship fund that has been stablished in Gary's memory. The Hicksville-based KeySpan Energy contributed $1,000 to the Gary Farley Memorial Fund, as it does for each of the races in the Grand Prix.
"We continue to be thrilled by the generosity of KeySpan," said Long Island Track & Field Secretary Jane McGraw. "They are a corporation with wonderful community spirit and we are truly thankful for their support for Long Island athletics. Our congratulations as well to Kieran Kelly and all the other Massapequa runners who supported the Gary Farley Run."
