The Massapequa Merchant Mile, held on Park Boulevard in Massapequa Park on Saturday, Aug. 21, marked the second event in the KeySpan Grand Prix of Long Distance Running to be held in the Massapequas, following the July 4 Firecracker 5-Kilometer Run.
The Merchants Mile was the 13th in the 20-race Grand Prix Series conducted by Long Island Track and Field. The event attracted over 100 runners to try their skill at the classic one-mile distance.
"We are thrilled to make Massapequa a double stop on the Grand Prix Tour," commented Long Island Track and Field President Susan Polansky. "Our friends from the Massapequa Road Runners put on excellent events and the Merchants Mile was certainly no exception to that rule."
The KeySpan Foundation contributes $1,000 to each of the charities that are the beneficiaries of Grand Prix races. At the Merchants Mile, KeySpan contributed $1,000 to the St. Rose of Lima Pantry Kitchen which supplies food to needy local people.
