More than 300 women showed up at the Woodward Parkway Elementary School in Farmingdale on July 11 to participate in the 16th annual Vytra Women's 5 Kilometer Run. Massapequa and Farmingdale runners came home with many awards in a field that included some of the top female runners in the world. The runners traveled a 3.1 mile course through the streets of South Farmingdale.

Teresa Wanjhiku of Kenya, was the overall winner, and Irish Republic national champion Breeda Dennehy Willis, finished second, however, many local women won age group awards. Patty Zebersky of Farmingdale was the first local runner to cross the finish line, scoring as 16th overall and 2nd in the 40-44 age group, with a finishing time of 18 minutes, 47 seconds.
Fourteen-year-old Massapequa speedster Jenna Daly took second place honors in the women's 14 and under age group in 22:19, and Tia Wofford of Farmingdale was fourth in that age group in 25:50. Trisha Fasini of Massapequa was second finisher in the 15-19 age group in 20:30. Colleen Kenny of Massapequa took fifth place honors in the 25-29 age group in 19:32. Jean Bohan of Farmingdale (19:26) and Laura Gluf of Massapequa Park scored third and fourth respectively in the 30-34 age group. Tough veteran runner Mary Anne Goldman of Farmingdale was the top finisher in the 50-54 age group, with a time of 22:02. Farmingdale's Diana Domenche ran a 28:41 to take fourth place honors in the Clydesdale 140-159 pound division.
The primary sponsor of the run was Vytra Health Plans, with other support being provided by OSI Pharmaceuticals, the Glen Head Flower Shop, The Runner's Edge of Farmingdale, and the Town of Oyster Bay and its department of recreation and parks. The run was conducted under the auspices of the Greater Long Island Running Club, with GLIRC's Suzanne Vasata serving as the race director.
