In an unscheduled meeting of the Massapequa School Board on Thursday, July 1, Project Manager Howard Lance ran off a list of renovations that are expected not to be completed by school openings in September.
Most of the projects that will not be 100 percent completed are to be done in the Ames School. Air conditioning in the principal, vice-principal, and nurses offices are all said to be incomplete. Three art rooms have been placed on a change order for new furniture and parent-teacher walk-throughs are to be added. A handicap ramp is needed, but will also not be ready in time for use by students and staff.
"There is a substantial amount of work that is needed to be done in a short amount of time," Lance said.
Project managers said that exploratory work is planned for next week and that their goal is to get all three art rooms completed. They said that the elevators and doors will definitely be completed. Coordination of computer location for mechanic systems are also almost completed.
The lockers in both the boys and girls locker rooms, however, will not be done. The existing lockers have already been removed, but the new ones cannot be installed until after school opens. Mr. Lance had a suggestion for this obstacle.
"We were thinking that in the meantime, students can use an empty classroom to change for gym," Lance recommended.
In elementary schools Vernon, McKenna and Birch, there seems to be a bigger problem. Although 50 percent of all glass block work is to be completed, as well as the North Wall, 126 windows cannot be opened or are extremely difficult to operate.
"We can't have these children sitting in 90-degree weather with no windows open in the classroom," Diane Krakoff, vice-president of the board said.
Lance advised that only teachers should be allowed to operate these temperamental windows because most of them can open, but need much force.
Also at the meeting, the school board passed a $114,904 measure that allows a roofing change order for roofing improvement at Berner Junior High. Roofing work has begun at all eight schools, and no violations have been reported.
Technology seems to be one area in good standing at this point in the summer. The district has five servers ready for use in the fall, as well as one IPTV server. Network software has been offered and furniture has been ordered.
"Once classrooms are completed they will be installed," said Assistant Superintendent Charles Sulc. "We are fairly comfortable where we are right now with two months remaining."
