Thousands of girls throughout the country will be participating in a new program this year, initiated by the Girl Scouts of the USA, called GirlSports 2000. From January 1st through December 31st, girls will participate in a series of sporting activities in their respective Girl Scout Troops/Groups.

"This program will provide an opportunity for girls and adult volunteers to participate in sports, regardless of their age or skill level," said Linda Gruskiewicz, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County, Inc. "It will enable the girls to create and nurture lifelong values of health and fitness."

Recently, local troop/group #2400 from the Massapequa Association (which includes: Massapequa & Massapequa Park) of Girl Scouts, completed their GirlSports 2000 day April 15th. More than 17 girls, under the coordination of their Leader Anna Giannandrea participated in the program. They went through an obstacle course. Girls received special GirlSports 2000 t-shirts along with a GirlSports 2000 patch as recognition for their participation.

Girl Scouts is the world's preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls ages 5-17, where girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adults, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives--like strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. In Girl Scouts, girls grow strong in mind, body and spirit.

Girl Scouts of Nassau County serves more than 19,000 girls in 36 Girl Scout Associations (local geographic units) with the support of over 5,000 adult members. The Girl Scout experience touches one in five girls in Nassau County.
