Stanley B. Lazarus, 74, succumbed on his birthday, Feb. 2, 1999, at Holy Cross Hospital, Ft. Lauderdale, from complications after heart surgery. He was a resident of Stuart, FL.

Stanley Lazarus was one of the pioneers of the modern auto dealership in NY. Born in Brooklyn, he served with the 13th Air Force in the Pacific as a bombardier. After his discharge in 1946, he started a used car business in Brooklyn called Riverside Auto Sales. He moved to Valley Stream in 1950 and stayed on LI until 1973 when he suffered his first heart attack.

In 1952 he opened Shore Motors, a Studebaker dealership in Port Washington. From 1953 to 1963 Mr. Lazarus opened several used car dealerships on LI including Z-Motors in Valley Stream specializing in muscle cars which were coming strongly into fashion among drivers and auto buffs. In 1963 he purchased Munn Motors, Ltd., selling MG, Land Rover, Austin Healy, Jaguar, Reilly,Datsun, Talbot, Rover Cars, Mini Cooper, Armstrong-Siddley, and Volvo brands. The Amityville/Massapequa location was destined to become Volvoville, USA, which eventually grew into America's largest Volvo dealership. In August of 1967, the rapidly growing Volvoville was featured in Newsday as one of LI's premier dealership success stories.

With his sons, he began one of America's first Land Rover dealerships. The business would eventually own four Land Rover dealerships, the only ones on LI. In 1987 he sold his business to his sons, Michael and Bryan. By 1991 Saturn was added to the Lazarus family list of automotive products and the business became known as the Lazarus Auto Group. Since 1997, the enterprise Stanely Lazarus founded has been known as the LI Automotive Group. Michael and Bryan Lazarus are still at the helm.

Mr. Lazarus will be remembered as a mentor and guide for many in the industry. He brought an unusual gift for numbers and analysis to his business and the many people he personally coached in their careers. Stanley was a great friend of Bill Wilson and helped hundreds of other friends of Bill Wilson in the last several years of his life. Those interested in continuing the charitable work done by Stanley Lazarus may wish to contribute to: Intergroup of Martin County, 22 E. Ocean Blvd., Stuart, FL 34996. Contributions in Stanley's memory will go toward reading materials and rental of meeting rooms.

He is survived by his wife Sally; his former wife Virginia and their children Michael, Jeffrey, Bryan and Patricia; five grandchildren; and his sister Ruth Margolis.
