The Massapequa Rascals Girls U10 soccer travel team went to the Rockland Invitational Tournament Jan. 2, which was represented by some of the finest teams in the region.
The Rascals went undefeated with four victories and one tie to win their division.
The Rascals started by defeating the Yonkers United 3-0, with the goals from Brittany Butts Cassie Zdrujeski and Caitlin Trupiano. They followed that with their only blemish - a hard fought 1-1 tie with the vastly underrated Levittown Blue Angels. The Rascals exploded in their third game with a 4-0 whitewash of the Auburdale Stampede, two goals by Samantha Fried and one each by Shannon Rogers and Hannah Sklar fueled the victory. The tournament came down to a showdown of the Rascals and their arch rivals, the East Islip Terminators, with whom they share an identical record. The Rascals prevailed with a 1-0 victory on a goal in the last minute of play by Mary Rose Dick. The Rascals closed out the tournament by beating the East Islip Tomcats 2-0 on goals by Arianna Kurtin and Shannon Rogers.
The defense led by Krystal Cantos, Heather Fusco, Katie Oehl, Hanna Sklar and Mary Rose Dick, was incredible. The goal tending of Jamie Lasota, who allowed only one goal, was outstanding. The coaches are Vet Kurtlin and assistant Japhet Contos.
