Runningback Stephon Solomon scored two touchdowns in a thrilling come-from-behind Mustang victory on Nov. 22.
The game, played at Burns Park, was an extremely hard played, hard-hitting affair. Both teams gave each other their best shots and neither team backed down to the other.
Roosevelt opened the scoring in the third quarter but the Mustangs answered right back. Chris Erkins kicked the two point extra point to make the score 8-6 going into the fourth quarter.
Midway through the fourth quarter Roosevelt scored again to make the score 14-8. The Mustangs then mounted an 80-yard touchdown drive that gave them a 15-14 lead with the extra point.
Roosevelt, without any timeouts left, tried to march down the field but time ran out with them on the Mustang 20-yard line.
The Massapequa Mustangs 11-year-old travel team, beat the Farmingdale Hawks, 20 - 14, in the first round of the NCYFL playoffs, held in Elmont on Nov. 22.
The Mustangs scored first, on a one-yard dive by quarterback Michael Powers, the extra point was missed, making the score Mustangs 6 Farmingdale 0.
The Mustangs scored again, in the second quarter, on a six-yard run by W Brian Clinton and the extra point was kicked and made by Kevin Dooley, making the score 14 - 0 at halftime.
In the second half, a bunch of offsides and fumbles by the Mustangs, allowed the Hawks to get back into the game, as the Hawks tied the score up at 14 - 14. But not to be denied, the Mustangs scored, what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown, on a run by TB Darrel Young, going six yards for the touchdown.
But the Hawks were not finished and started to drive the ball until CB Sean McKenna intercepted the ball and ran it back 11 yards before being tackled.
Congratulations to the Mustang 10-year-old travel team on their championship victory. The win was oh so sweet as they contained a fast Hempstead team that had beat them in their last two meetings.
The Mustangs were fired up for this game, which was played at Hampton Field in Mineola. It was a beautiful day for football and the champion Mustangs showed all their fans and the Hempstead Tiger Cubs that they would not settle for second best.
The Mustangs won the toss and as the captains, Everrette Benjamin, Jake Born, Chris Hurst and Michael Summus came back to the bench the team was fired up and ready to play. The opening kickoff was returned to the Hempstead 40-yard line as Michael Summus almost broke it all the way. Good blocks by Jimmy Kuhns and Everrette Benjamin set up the 40-yard return. The Mustang offense then marched the ball down to the Hempstead 10-yard line. Strong lead blocks by James Muhlbauer, Ryan Russo, Doug Stolfi, Ken Fusco, Dominick Robertazzi and Charlie Seelinger helped to move the ball down the field.
On second and long, the Mustangs went to their tackle eligible play that appeared would go for a touchdown but the ball could not be controlled by Doug Stolfi. The Hempstead Tigers stopped the Mustang drive and took over at the 10-yard line. The Mustang defense held their ground, good line play by Jimmy Kuhns, D.J. Hancock and Robert Santangelo forced the Tigers to punt. The long snap went over the punter's head and when the dust settled the Mustangs had gotten a two-point lead on a safety.
The Tigers then kicked off from their 20-yard line and the Mustangs once again had good field position. Jake Born led the Mustangs on this drive, on a third and short, the quarterback saw an opening and called an audible from the line of scrimmage. He took the ball up the middle and scored the first Mustang touchdown from 20 yards out. With a 8-0 lead the Mustangs went for a two-point conversion, the kick from Nick Bujacich hit the upright and fell short. The Mustang defense played well and tackles by Sean Lewis, Steve Melia, Jonathan Goodelmann and Mike Andriano helped the Mustangs go into halftime with a eight-point lead.
The second half started with the Mustangs kicking to the Tigers. It looked like the Mustangs would go back on offense when the kick off hit a Hempstead player and the ball was covered by Dominick Robertazzi of the Mustangs special teams. The referees, however, called the ball out of bounds and Hempstead took over on the 50 yard line. The Hempstead team scored on a 40 yard run and converted the extra point. The score was 8 - 7, and the Mustangs had their work cut out for them.
The game was very physical and the players from both teams were battered. Chris Hurst, playing with a sore ankle, ran off tackle for a 35 yard touchdown run. He had to come out of the game on offense but after he got taped up, he went back in for defense. The Mustangs then continued to control the ball and the line of scrimmage, with good all around play by Kirk Zachery, James Licata, Kevin Greenhalgh and Marc Amato.
The defense held the explosive Hempstead running game to minimal yardage. The game plan going into the game was to contain the speedy number 32. Strong outside containment by Matt Barnathon and Michael Summus and inside coverage by linebacker Everrette Benjamin held the Tigers to seven points. Hempstead had been averaging four to five touchdowns a game and had scored three touchdowns three weeks ago when they beat our Mustangs 19 - 7. The big play of the game came on an attempted screen pass in the Hempstead backfield, Jake Born, playing defensive end stepped in front of the pass and intercepted the ball on the Mustang 35 yard line. The Mustangs used that as a momentum booster and marched the ball down the field. Good strong running by Michael Summus, Everrette Benjamin and back up halfback D.J. Hancock led the Mustangs to another touchdown and the championship. Jake Born scored from the one yard line and the Mustangs went on to win 20-7. The taste of revenge was very sweet.
