The 11-year-old team ended their regular season with a 22-12 victory over the visiting Baldwin Bombers on Nov. 15. This game brought the Mustangs' winning streak to seven straight wins, with an overall record of 7-1.
The Mustangs won the coin toss, but elected to defer to the second half. So the Mustangs lined up for the opening kick, which was an onside kick by Kicker Kevin Dooley, who laid down a beautiful kick, which was recovered by Jonathan Schneider. The Mustangs drove the ball to the Bombers' 15-yard line, but failed to punch it in and Baldwin took over on downs. The Mustang defense came up big and shut down the Bombers' offense.
On the Mustangs' next offensive possession, TB Darrel Young ran outside 35 yards for a touchdown. Kevin Dooley kicked for the extra points for an 8-0 lead. In the second quarter, E Sean McKenna ran a counter up the middle of the field, untouched, for a touchdown. This time, a bad snap caused Kicker Peter Cardone to fail to convert the extra point try, bringing the score to 14-0 at the half.
In the third quarter, QB Michael Powers scored on a QB bootleg, 30 yards, diving into the end zone for the Mustangs' third touchdown. This time, Kicker Kevin Dooley nailed the extra point kick, bringing the score to 22-0.
In the second half, the Gold Defense of the Mustangs came up big. Tim Bates dove on an onside kick try, allowing the Mustangs to keep the ball, CB Mark Henry played a very strong game at the corner, knocking down a pass, almost intercepting two passes and made numerous tackles. LB John DeLucia also had a near interception and played strong and S Michael Ortiz made a touchdown saving tackle, drilling the running back and knocking him out of bounds.
The Massapequa Mustangs' 10-year-old Travel Team traveled to Elmont where they met the Farmingdale Hawks on Nov. 15. The explosive offense, combined with the powerful defense dominated the game as the Mustangs won 32-6. The Mustangs will meet the Hempstead Tiger Cubs next Sunday to decide the league champs.
The Mustangs started on defense, and after the first three plays, Farmingdale was forced to punt. The front line of Jimmy Kuhns, Doug Stolfi, Ryan Russo, Jake Born, Robert Santangelo and D.J. Hancock were too strong for the Hawks. After the Mustangs fielded the punt, the offense took over. Strong lead blocks from James Muhlbauer, Ken Fusco, Charlie Seelinger, Dominick Robertazzi and Mike Andriano enabled Fullback Everette Benjamin to run 51 yards on the second play from scrimmage to put the Mustangs up 6-0.
The Mustangs dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Jake Born scored on a quarterback sneak to put the Mustangs up 13-0 early in the second quarter. The Mustang defense led by cornerback Chris Hurst, Sean Lewis, Steven Melia and Jonathon Goodelmann were able to get the ball back with two minutes left in the half. Michael Summus then broke off a 60-yard run to set up another Mustang touchdown. Summus scored three plays later and after Jake Born hit Jimmy Kuhns with a three-yard pass for the extra point the Mustangs were up 20-0 at halftime.
The second half was even more frustrating for the Hawks as strong defensive play by James Licata, Marc Amato and Kevin Greenhalgh held the Hawks to only six points. Late in the third quarter, corner back Kirk Zachery recovered a fumble inside the Hawks 30-yard line. Back up Fullback Nick Bujacich set up the last Mustang touchdown by strong runs up the middle. Matthew Barnathan went two yards on a quarterback sneak to finish out the scoring.
The fans at the game appreciated how well the team looked. The coaches are very proud of the team as a whole. Besides great blocking, gang tackling and ball control, the Mustangs played one of the most disciplined games ever played.
