Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities from the Massapequas and Farmingdale are cordially invited to sign up for the 6th annual edition of "Rob's Run", a 5 Kilometer Cross Country race and team competition to be held on Sunday morning, Nov. 29, starting and finishing at Stillwell Woods Town Park on South Woods Road in Syosset. The starting gun will go off promptly at 9 AM.
This year's Run is being sponsored by Long Island Blood Services, a division of the New York Blood Center, in conjunction with LIBS's annual "Athletes for Life" Blood Drive. The Run will once again be administered by the Plainview-Old Bethpage Road Runners Club in conjunction with the Town of Oyster Bay. It will be conducted under the direction of Ed Melnik and Steve Klemes of the Road Runners Club, with technical assistance provided by David Katz of Finish Line Road Race Technicians.
Awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers overall, and to each member of the top three teams of four runners each in the men's, women's and co-ed open and masters divisions. There will also be special awards to each member of the top three boys and top three girls high school teams and, for the first time this year, to each member of the top three boys and top three girls middle school teams as well.
The entry fee is $13 for individuals and $52 for teams for those who pre-register, and $16 for individuals and $64 for teams for those who wait until the day of the Run to sign up. Everyone who registers for the Run will receive a special commemorative long sleeve T-shirt. There will be great post-run refreshments for everyone.
Rob's Run is staged each year in memory of Rob Lauterborn, a fine young man and outstanding runner whose untimely death at the age of 26 left a void in the Long Island running community. Proceeds from Rob's Run will once again be turned over to ASPIRE, the special program that provides prosthetic devices and intensive physical therapy and rehabilitation through athletics to young amputees, victims of bone cancer and traumatic amputations.
"Rob's Run is a cross country event through beautiful trails and wooded areas in Stillwell Woods, utilizing part of the Nassau Greenbelt Trail. It's a refreshing change from running the roads or on a track--and one that everyone should thoroughly enjoy," said Co-Race Director Ed Melnik. "It is especially fitting that we hold this kind of event in Rob Lauterborn's memory. Rob loved to run, and would most definitely have wanted to be remembered in connection with an event aimed both at fostering cross country running and at helping young people."
