Welcome back Seniors. The Mustang Senior Team finally woke up Oct. 25 and played to their potential in their best game of the season against the Valley Stream Hornets.
Playing in Valley Stream, it was a good oldfashioned Massapequa Valley Stream smash mouth football game, the Mustangs left with a 26-24 victory.
Our two running backs, Lionel Bullard and John Cornell, played to win from the first play to the last. Fullback Lionel Bullard did not score in this game, but showed how to be a fullback and helped lead John Cornell to three touchdowns.
The team even had a surprise 62 yard run from backup tailback John Simms when it really needed it. The Mustangs scored on the first possession by driving right down field and Cornell ran it in from the 5 yard line.
Chris Erkens kicked the extra point. After shutting down the Hornets, Valley Stream was forced to punt and the snap went into the end zone. Keith Romeo was there to make the tackle for the safety.
The second touchdown capped another great Mustang drive with Cornell running in from the 10 yard line. Erkens hit the P.A.T.. The offensive line, Joe Andriano, Eric Cole, Tom Dejewski, Tim Melia, Keith Romeo and Ron Stevens, did a great job all day picking up blitz's and making the way for the backs.
On fourth and twelve and the game tied at 18-18 in the fourth quarter, quarterback Chris Cox threw a perfect pass to John Cornell who made a great catch between two defenders, for the first down.
Two plays later Cornell ran 25 yards for the final score and Erkens hit his third P.A.T. With under two minutes left Valley Stream scored to make it 26-24, but the point after was blocked by Massapequa to secure the victory.
Massapequa's defense played their best game and stopped Valley Stream at critical times. The Hornet's offense was big and powerful and were contained as well as they could be by the Mustangs. Critical interceptions were made by Eric Cole and Chris Erkens near the end of the game. Rocco Dionisio turned in another strong defensive performance.
The Mustang 12-Year-Olds traveled to Bellmore Oct. 25 and continued their winning ways with another 26-0 victory, this time at the hands of the Bellmore Braves.
The first score of the game came on a 15 yard counter by Frankie Ingenito. The extra point conversion was good on a pass from Corey Greco to Ingenito making the score 7-0.
After holding the Braves on the ensuing kick-off, the Mustangs scored again on a 24 yard pass play from Corey Greco to Christopher Kachmar. The extra point was unsuccessful and the score was 13-0 after the first quarter.
The Braves were again held after the kick-off with the Mustangs taking over on the Brave 29 yard line. On the next play from scrimmage, Delton Warrick ran for 29 yards for the score. The point after was again no good and the score was 20-0 which remained that way to halftime.
After kicking off to the Braves at the beginning of the second half, the Mustangs defense held tough forcing Bellmore to turn the ball over on downs. After several runs, the Mustangs marched the ball to the Bellmore 1 yard line as Scott Henry dove for a score over the right side of the line. The point after was no good. The score held at 26-0.
There was no further scoring and again the defense led by Geoff Leone, Robert Driscoll, Ron Lanzillotta held the Braves to a few first downs but also negative yardage.
Credit must be given to the offensive line for protecting the quarterbacks Corey Greco and Tim Tierney. They played a fine game. For a second week in a row, all of the Mustangs played, some of the most unexpected personnel even carried the ball.
The Massapequa Mustangs (4-1) took on the Elmont Cardinals (3-3) at John J. Burns Park on Oct. 25 for what turned out to be a defensive battle for both teams.
The Cardinals scored first. After returning the opening kickoff 30 yards, on the first play from scrimmage, caught the Mustangs defense sleeping by running a sweep around the right side and going untouched for the touchdown. After running in the extra point, the score was Elmont -7, Mustangs - 0.
The Mustang offense, finally scored late in the first quarter, due to the strong offensive line blocking of E Kevin Dooley, LT Donald Hartmann, LG Kevin Cooney, C Kevin Osemwengie, RG Kevin "Spanky" Mulhern, RT Peter Cardone and E Ken Hassler.
QB Michael Powers handed off to TB Jonathan Schneider, who ran 10 yards for the touchdown and what turned out to be the winning point was the extra point kick for 2 points by Kevin Dooley, which brought the score to the 8-7 final. QB Michael Powers, FB Jonathan "Doc" Schneider and W Brian Clinton also had strong games running the ball on offense.
But this game belonged to the defense, who came on strong, with outstanding plays being made by E Ryan Stubbmann (1 QB sack), E Kevin Dooley (1 QB sack), T Donald Hartmann, CB Chris Hayes, T Kevin "Spanky" Mulhern and LB Peter Cardone. The entire Mustang defense limited the Elmont Cardinals to only 3 first downs the rest of the game.
This was a special game for the coaching staff, who saw this Mustang team leave their hearts on the field today. Today, the Massapequa Mustangs 11-year-old travel team moved up another level in maturity, and another step closer to returning to the Championship game.
The Mustangs will face Inwood Buccaneers (3-2) in Inwood next week at 12:30 pm.
The 10-Year-Old Travel Team remains undefeated through six games as they outscored on the first play from scrimmage, but the play was called back on a questionable holding call. Michael Summus had run 45 yards after eluding a slew of Brave tacklers.
After marking off the ten yard penalty, Matt Barnathon dropped back on the next play and Michael Summus on a fly pattern that went 55 yards for the touchdown. For Matt Barnathon it was his first touchdown pass this year.
The Mighty Mustangs controlled the line of scrimmage and scored two more times before the half. Everette Benjamin scored from 10 yards out behind the blocking of Doug Stolfi and Mike Andrianno.
Chris Hurst scored from 5 yards out after the defense and forced a turnover late in the second quarter. In the second half D.J. Hancock ran for 40 yards for his first touchdown of year. Nick "Chachi" Buschich converted the extra point kick.
