The Nassau County Sports Commission (NCSC) has announced the start of the National Women's Touch Football League (NWTFL) in Nassau County. Beginning with introductory training sessions prior to the season's start on Saturday, Sept. 26, local women will be breaking into the traditionally male-dominated sport of touch football. These women will be suiting up every Saturday this fall in Eisenhower Park to play 6-on-6 touch football games on NFL regulation-size fields.

The NWTFL was created by Bobby Jackson, a former New York Jets defensive back, who played on the team from 1978 until 1986. Jackson will serve as the president of the league. The NWTFL represents another new and exciting sport coming to Nassau County, especially for female athletes. The league was created in response to the strong demand from women who were interested in participating in this male-dominated sport. The enthusiasm for this program has been great. Although going fast, some space is still available for additional players. Beginners are welcome. Don't be left out! Join in, have fun, and experience this new sport for women.

The NWTFL enjoys the support of the NCSC, the Women's Sports Foundation (WSF) and the New York Jets. "The Nassau County Sports Commission and the Women's Sports Foundation are excited to provide women with the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports. Now they will be able to throw a touchdown pass or make a dazzling interception just like their male counterparts," said Dr. Gary Wadler, chairman of the NCSC and a trustee of the WSF. For more information on this league, please call the NCSC at 365-9625 or email the NCSC through its website www.nassausports.org.

The Nassau County Sports Commission is a nonprofit organization. It was created in 1992 by Nassau County Executive Thomas S. Gulotta to promote and enhance the quality of life for Nassau County citizens, while improving the economy of the county through sports. The NCSC supports every aspect of sports and fitness, from the most local and grassroots programming to the professional level for youth, masters and the differently-abled.
