The Columbus Lodge #2143 Order of Sons of Italy (OSIA) in America played an inter-squad softball game on Sunday, July 12, as Squad B scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Squad A 13-12.

The game had all the makings of a blowout as Squad A scored nine runs in the first two innings and led 9-3 after two. Dave Saviano, who is hitting .563, led the attack with two doubles and Anthony Curran hit a solo home run.

In the fifth inning, Rocco Recce cracked a one-out single to left. One batter later, veteran Joe Contorno smacked a two-run home run (his first of the year) to cut the lead to 10-7. Contorno had a spectacular game in the field and at the plate. He would finish the game with five hits, three runs and five RBIs.

Affectionately known as the "Chicken Man," Frank Roseto brings humor to a competitive game. While Frank enjoys a good joke, once he steps up to the plate he is all business. Roseto's four-hit performance contributed to Squad B's comeback. His seventh-inning RBI single and his eighth-inning run scored, cut Squad A's lead to 11-10. In the ninth, Rocco Recce opened with a single past a diving Squad A third baseman. Joe Contorno stepped up to the plate and promptly doubled to right, setting up a no-out, second and third situation. Paul Diamond, who had been struggling at the plate, promptly delivered a game-winning double to left, scoring the tying and winning runs.

Other OSIA News: July 10's 18-1 and 21-14 victories against Grassi and Company were highlighted by Daron Tripoli and Dave Saviano home runs and Ed Bochynski's five-hit performance...the Columbus Lodge's Third Annual Golf outing will be on Sept. 21 at Bay Golf Club.
