The Columbus Lodge #2143 Order of Sons Italy in America played an inter-squad softball game on Sunday, May 26 as Lee Miceli and Squad A pounced on Squad B, 18 - 10.
Squad B took its only lead of the game in the bottom of the first inning, as Andy Poulin and Nick Bonsignore (who made his first appearance in two years because of an inner ear infection), scored. Poulin's 3 for 5 performance in the game, leaves him hitting .818 for this young season.
In the second inning, Squad A tied the score as Ed Bochynski doubled in Stu Heller and then scored on a single by David Welsh. Squad A's Lee Miceli and Dave Saviano scored in the third to give the A's the lead for good, 4-3.
The A's broke the game open with a five run explosion that expanded the lead to 12-3, after six innings. The scoring occurred when Lee Miceli hit a two run homer and Ed Bochynski doubled in Stu Heller for the second time in the game; David Welsh capped the inning with his first homerun of the year.
Showing he is still "King of the Hill," Chuck Diamond mowed down his opponents with a strong pitching performance. Throughout the game Lee Miceli aided Diamond's cause by saving at least four runs (maybe more) with his glove, at the hot corner. Miceli treated the assembled crowd with a variety of sparkling defensive catches.
Squad B's four run rally in the eighth cut the lead to 13-8. However, in the top of the ninth, Lee Miceli drove in Frank Roseto and Joe Contorno; and Dave Saviano hit his second homerun of the year to cap the A's five run assault that ensured the 18-10 victory.
For Lee Miceli, he continues to impress at both the plate (3 for 5, three runs scored) and in the field (five put-outs and five assists). Led by Stu Heller's four hit performance, the A's had eight players collect at least three hits each and, collectively, the A's had 28 hits for the game.
The Columbus Lodge #2143 Order of Sons of Italy in America would like to congratulate two of its members on their recent graduation from college. Anthony Curran graduated from Hofstra University with honors and Daron Tripoli graduated from SUNY at Farmingdale. Great job guys.
