Gladys K. Thurston, 91, of Massapequa, died on March 20, 1998. She graduated from St. John's University with a law degree, a rarity for a female of her time.
Mrs. Thurston worked locally and in Washington DC with the Association of General Merchandise Chains, a trade association representing the country's largest chain stores. She was chief counsel and executive secretary and was listed in Who's Who of American Women in 1971. She was also in charge of preparing an annual index of new laws affecting retail chain businesses.
Mrs. Thurston retired in the 1970s and later joined the private firm of Bushman, Gresser and Wadman. She took over the practice, brought in her grandson, and started the law firm of Kiernan, Angiulo & Horowitz, now in Jericho (her grandson, Michael Angiulo of Massapequa is still a partner). She ran for the Oyster Bay Town Council and retired again in the 1980s.
Mrs. Thurston was a member of the Soroptimist Club, she helped senior citizens file their income tax and was a literacy volunteer. She was named ombudsman for the Senior Citizens Committee in 1983. She wrote poetry about aging and was published in Taproot, a magazine for senior citizens in NC.
Mrs. Thurston was predeceased by her first husband, Douglas Kiernanm, her son, Douglas Kiernan and and her second husband Bruce Thurston. She is survived by her daughter Jeanne Anguilo of Massapequa; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were made by the Charles G. Schmitt Funeral Home, Seaford. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery.
Josephine Amodio, of Massapequa, died on March 30, 1998. Wife of the late Joseph. Mother of Lillian, Cecelia, Jacqueline and Donna. Grandmother of 10. Great-grandmother of seven. Arrangements were made by the James Funeral Home, Massapequa. Funeral Mass at St. Martin of Tours RC Church. Interment St. John's Cemetery.
