I am a candidate for the Massapequa Board of Education because I have a special interest in our children.
As a 40 year resident of Massapequa, I have watched our school district change over the years. While many of these changes have been positive, I see a real need for a new direction. I believe that I can make a difference. I want to establish better communication and foster an environment of trust, necessary ingredients if a district is to strive for excellence. I am also very concerned about the demands of the New York State Standards on our educational system. These requirements force a re-evaluation of classroom instruction.
Our district is at a crossroads. The right direction must be chosen now. If given a chance, I can make an impact on the district to overcome our existing problems and meet the demands of the future head on. My association with community residents, as a recipient of the Lifetime Membership Award from the PTA and as a member on several district committees, has afforded me a positive relationship with so many people in Massapequa. My background as a professional educator has provided me with the insight I need to make a difference on both the elementary and the secondary levels. As a trained liaison for the New York State Education Department, I know what we need in order to meet the Standards and the new assessments. As a long-time resident of Massapequa, I am keenly aware of the financial impact placed on the community and will be a guardian of all budgetary considerations.
As a board member my goals are to:
-
develop a Strategic Plan with steps for achievement clearly identified so there is accountability and assessment.
-
redistribute funds to match the goals set in the district's improvement plan.
-
develop a State of the District report based on district goals, not solely dependent on the New York State Report Card.
-
research the merits of a nine period day in providing more flexibility in scheduling.
-
get input from all segments of the community about the open campus and the district's options.
-
examine where the district is in relation to the five year guidance program and assess its success.
-
attend the PRIDE survey and improve on the district's Substance Awareness Program.
-
recognize that violence in schools has become a problem and develop a district violence prevention program.
-
meet the needs of the expanding Special Education population by seeking grants to ease the district's financial responsibility.
-
evaluate the kindergarten program and the new elementary reading program in light of the latest educational research.
-
evaluate the existing Aids Program for standardization and provide inservice training to new staff members.
I am committed to the Massapequa School District and to the children who remain my #1 priority. My experience as a parent, a grandparent, an educator, a community volunteer and now as retiree provides me with a unique understanding of and respect for the many viewpoints and interests that are held by Massapequa residents.
