Massapequa truly had its moment in the sun on April 25 when the newly-refurbished high school track was officially opened to the delight of athletes from more than 50 different schools and the many people who were instrumental in bringing to Massapequa a first-rate track and field facility.

Chief Turf: There's no mistaking where you are when you see the big sign near the track proclaiming that it's Chief Turf. Gathering near the sign were participants in the Nassau County Coaches' Meet, the first official track and field event at Massapequa's refurbished facility.

Kevin McCann, director of health, athletics and physical education, had the honor of leading the opening ceremonies. Joining in the festivities were the Massapequa Board of Education, members of the district's administration, track coaches from Massapequa's past and present and other individuals whose efforts were instrumental in bringing about the completion of the track project.

After gathering for a keepsake photograph, the field was cleared for the student stars who competed in the Nassau County Coaches Meet. Competitors from 55 schools across Long Island inaugurated the track and agreed that it was indeed impressive.
