The need for more parks, fields, and recreational facilities in the Massapequas is very strong. Children in the neighborhood need a place to play, relax, and enjoy themselves. And so do adults.

But, even if on the outside a plan sounds like an intelligent idea, like converting an old unused sump into a soccer field, there are always other considerations to be acknowledged. If the community close to the proposed site is against it, then their concerns should be addressed.

On the outside the plan for the sump on Linden St. would seem like an ideal proposition. The soccer club would have another field for the children of Massapequa to use, the county would have one less drainage basin to maintain, and the community would have use of yet another recreational facility.

However, this proposed site might not be the best site to use. The traffic on Linden St. is extremelt heavy. Anyone who drives down Linden St. in the afternoon knows that it's impossible for two cars to pass each other successfully.

As a soccer field, the area would be bombarded with traffic coming in and out the field all day long. This could lead to a very dangerous situation.

It was more than clear at Tuesday's community forum on the issue that local residents are opposed to the proposal.

This proposal, in any form, should not go forward until after receiving the approval of local residents. And, if local residents do not approve any such proposal, then the plans should be withdrawn.

Coming Soon... School Board Elections

In Massapequa and Plainedge, elections will be held on May 19 for the office of board of education trustee.

Every resident of either school district has the option and the right to run for elected office. If you have concerns with how the district is being run, on how things ought to be done, or with how your tax dollars are spent then you should exercise that right.

Go down to the district clerk's office and ask for an information packet for potential candidates. Usually about 100 signatures are needed and then you're a candidate.

Let's exercise democracy in our community.
