Massapequa High School junior Christie Welsh gives her all when it comes to playing soccer and her hard work has earned her a spot on one of the most prestigious national lists of all stars.
Christie was one of 41 young women named to Parade magazine's sixth annual All-American High School Girl's Scocer Team. To be named to Parade's national team, players must first be nominated by coaches, scouts or recruiters. In Christie's case, she was recommended by her state and regional soccer coaches.
"I put so much work into what I do," said Christie who has been playing soccer since the age of six. "I love my sport...I practice six days a week and attend soccer camps in the summer - I look at this as being a reward."
Adding to her reward was the opportunity to attend a one-week camp sponsored by Parade magazine in California last December. While there, Christie met her fellow national team members, participated in various soccer clinics, received tips and advice from top coaches, and played against the national team from Australia. An ambitious young woman, Christie refers to the experience as "another step" toward her lifelong goal.
"I feel there is a lot more to accomplish," she said. "I hope to make the national team again next year, but my ultimate goal is to be in the Olympics."
