This week the Massapequan Observer reported on two topics which, at a first glance, don't seem related in any meaningful way. But, a closer look reveals that one is a direct cause of the other.
For the group of local artists who call themselves Standing 8 Count, music is what keeps them interested, motivated, and content. It is essential that the school system in any district ensures that the children who leave that system are fully prepared for the world they want to enter. And, despite the changing philosophical direction of the New York State Board of Regents, academics are not always the main focus of some students' lives. Some, like the teens who are members of the band Standing 8 Count, prefer the artistic world over the academic.
The traditional courses that students have taken over the years, such as math, science, history, etc., are important, but so is music, designing, dance, theater, and drama.
The school districts in the Massapequas have an obligation to promote these programs and to make them fully available to all students. These programs are expensive, but when the next generation is able to excel, the rewards are then more rewarding.
Massapequa School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Brucia has recently been selected "Administrator of the Year" by the Nassau School Library System.
Jim has always been an intelligent, articulate, and moderate superintendent who has consistently tried to serve, not only the children in Massapequa, but the community as a whole.
Therefore, we congratulate Dr. James I. Brucia for his commitment to the children in the Massapequa School District.
