The Manhasset Softball Girls PAL second-grade Angels earned their first two wins last week against heavily favored second/third grade rivals the Oakland A’s and Chicago Cubs. Both games were well coached by their opponents and the Angels would like to compliment them for their sportsmanship and outstanding play.
On Thursday night, May 28, on a rain soaked field, the Angels played a nail biter of a game against the Oakland A’s. Tied 5 to 5 in the last inning and down to their last strike with bases loaded in a weather-shortened game, Angels hitter Niamn Mansfield singled to left field to defeat the A’s by a score of 6 to 5. Contributing in the field were left fielder Francesca Flood, behind the plate Emma Brady and shortstop Erin McAree.
Saturday morning, May 30, the Angels defeated the league leading Cubs by holding the power-hitting Cubs to only 5 runs. A well-pitched game by Stephanie Mahler and defensive plays by Caroline Taylor, Isabella Melkonian, Avery Guido, Kylie Morgano and catcher Katie Kessenich sealed the win. The offense was led by Isabella Kosciusko, Sophia Gajdjis, Lara McCusker and Kalli Medzhibovsky.
Coaches Mahler, Melkonian and Kosciusko are preparing the girls team for the upcoming softball playoffs.
