On April 25, Manhasset residents Jordyn Mannino and Alexis Stern will be competing in the Junior Olympic Gymnastics, Region VI All-Star Championships. Both girls were victorious in the Level 8 New York State Gymnastics Championships on March 28. Of the 240 gymnasts, from 47 different gyms throughout New York State, only the top scorers advanced to the regional championship. They will be competing against accomplished gymnasts from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York.
The girls met doing cartwheels at a gymnastics birthday party when they were just 4 years old. Since then, their friendship and love for gymnastics blossomed. Although the girls are competing for the same goals, their camaraderie remains strong. They train five days a week, Jordyn, at Mid-Island Gymnastics, Hicksville and Alexis at Gold Medal Gymnastics, Huntington. In addition to learning how to land on their feet, the girls learn the value of determination and dedication. Jordyn’s favorite events are the uneven bars and vault. Alexis’ favorite events are the balance beam and floor. Outside of the gym, Jordyn participates in Manhasset Girls Scouts and Alexis plays soccer in the Manhasset Soccer League. Both are in the fifth grade.
