The Manhasset Crew team launched its 2009 spring season winning numerous medals in two prominent New Jersey regattas. The team of 46 rowers and 8 coxswains, along with their coaching staff (Head Coach Hugo Guardado Henriquez (Varsity Men), Assistant Coaches Stephanie Doughty (Varsity Women) and Nick Vlahos (Novice Men and Women), supported by Alan Pedisich and Dan Kozerski) participated first in the Mercer Lake/ISA Sculling Championships on April 18 and then in the New Jersey Scholastic Rowing Championships on April 25.
At the Mercer Lake/ISA Sculling Championship the team had an impressive showing, earning nine medals. These included four First Place gold medals for the Men’s Varsity 4, rowing in a field of 14 entries, (Nick Kavourias (coxswain), Ty Louis, Michael Yee, Sebastian Barerra, Joe Calderone), two boats in the Men’s 2nd Varsity 4 (Bernard Liu (coxswain), Jimmy Krach, Matt LoBello, Hayes Brown, Robbie Hogan; and Nick Bilotto (coxswain) Ty Louis, Michael Yee, Sebastian Barerra, Joe Calderone), and the Women’s Lightweight 4 (Emily Battaglia (coxswain), Elizabeth Henry, Maria Manis, Kerrigan Hummel, Kristin Wilhouski).
The team also won three Second Place silver medals with both of the boats rowing in the Women’s 2nd Varsity 4 event (Margot Cyprus (coxswain), Jennifer Aitken, Megan Clarke, Ali Margherio, Ariane Ingber; and Virginia Brodie (coxswain), Kerrigan Hummel, Maria Manis, Natalie Moreira, Kristen Wilhouski) as well as the Men’s Novice 8 (Alex Kavourias (coxswain), Stefan Hummel, Paris Thatos, Chris Kassabian, Max Johnson, Lucas Smilios, Chris Donovan, Christian Voto, Alan Delaney).
Manhasset earned two Third Place bronze medals in the Women’s Varsity 4 event (Margot Cyprus (coxswain), Jennifer, Aitken, Megan Clarke, Ali Margherio, Elizabeth Henry), rowing among a field of 21 boats, and the Women’s Novice 8 rowing in their first Spring competition (Justine Yunakov (coxswain), Katie Keane, Slaney O’Hanlon, Olivia Henry, Catriona Whalley, Brittney Lee, Leah Ruggiero, Antonia Parsons, Celine Rubio).
Other entries included: the Mens 2nd Varsity 8 (Nick Bilotto (coxswain), Jimmy Krach, James Izzo, Hayes Brown, Matt LoBello, Ross Kapetanos, Chris Yiachos, Shivam Patel, Robbie Hogan) and the Mens 3rd Varsity 4, with Manhasset’s novice boat (Carlo Calcagni (Coxswain), Zan Kostoulas, Justin Erb, Douglas Sostar, Matt Guild) making a fine showing for their first event of the season.
The following weekend at the New Jersey Scholastic State Championships, the team continued its winning tradition, most notably garnering two First Place New Jersey State Championship finishes. These winning boats were the Men’s Senior 4 (Nick Kavourias (coxswain), Ty Louis, Michael Yee, Sebastian Barerra, Joe Calderone), and the Women’s Junior 4 (Margot Cyprus (coxswain), Jennifer, Aitken, Megan Clarke, Ali Margherio, Elizabeth Henry).
The Women’s Novice 8 (Justine Yunakov (coxswain), Katie Keane, Olivia Henry, Antonia Parsons, Catriona Whalley, Brittney Lee, Leah Ruggiero, Emily Battaglia, Celine Rubio) earned a second place finish at NJ States.
This spring is the team’s third season under the guidance of Head Coach Hugo Guardado Henriquez. The newest addition to the coaching staff is Nick Vlahos, an alumnus of the Manhasset Crew Program and now, an assistant coach for the Manhasset Crew Team. Nick, a graduate of Manhasset High School (Class of 2004), began his rowing career as a rower during his senior year at Manhasset. He was recruited by Temple University where he rowed for the next four years. During this time, he achieved a second place medal in the varsity four event at the prestigious IRA regatta. While attending Temple University, Nick acquired a BA in Science and was recently accepted to the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury. In addition to coaching Novice Crew, Nick was also an assistant coach for Manhasset’s wrestling team this winter.
