Manhasset Wrestling had its best finish ever in the Herricks Tournament, scoring 56.5 points which is almost triple their highest finish ever of 22 points. There were two champions, brothers Mike Fera (freshman) and Nick Fera (senior).
The team is in a rebuilding year with one senior (Nick Fera), three juniors (Alex Ardito, Max Krauss, and Jack Ruggiero) and 27 freshmen and sophomores.
To put Manhasset wrestling on the map, Manhasset hired two new coaches with excellent credentials. Junior Varsity Coach, Kyle Simensky, was County Champion and two-time All-County. The Varsity Coach, Louis Di Maria, is a 1993 World Team Member, 1992 and 1993 All-American – Penn State University, and a 1992 New York State Champion. Coach DiMaria owns Joanne’s Gourmet Pizza located in Roslyn on Northern Boulevard.
Coach DiMaria stated, “The Manhasset community has all the pieces in place to become one of the best teams in the state. I believe there are three things needed to establish a premier wrestling program… first, good athletes, second good coaching, and third, proper resources such as parent involvement, boosters, etc… Manhasset has all the pieces in place… We have a young team… If we can get some more of the top athletes in the district to come out for the team and with another year or two experience for our freshman and sophomores I feel that we can put Manhasset Wrestling on the map. Manhasset has never had a Division 1 County Champion and this year we already have two wrestlers ranked in the top 4 in Nassau County. We have Mike Fera (103 lbs.) ranked fourth in the county, and we have his brother Nick Fera (145 lbs.) ranked third in the county… Both of these wrestlers have a legitimate chance to be Manhasset’s first ever Division 1 Nassau County Champion. I would like to encourage everyone in the community to come down to a few matches and support our team in our quest in establishing Manhasset Wrestling as one of NY’s premier wrestling programs.”
