The air was crisp and the sun was shinning for Manhasset’s first annual Principal’s Classic Tennis Tournament held on Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Manhasset High School tennis courts. Thirty-two students in grades 7-12 came together at 10 o’clock to participate in this fundraising event to benefit the Court of Champions Tennis Project.
The big draw for the students was the chance to earn a spot in the final match with Superintendent of Schools Charlie Cardillo and Manhasset Secondary School Principal Dr. Dean Schlanger.
The tournament began with eight students competing on each of the four high school courts in qualifying rounds to win one of eight spots in the quarterfinals. The eight quarter finalists were: Amelia Conner-grade 8, Carter Peterson-grade 7, Jesse Levitin-grade 7, Courtney DiGia-grade 8, Paige Pacent-grade 10, Emily Santos-grade 10, Kaitlin Miller-grade 10, and Harrison DiGia-grade 11. After the quarterfinals were completed Harrison DiGia, Amelia Conner, Emily Santos and Jesse Levitin advanced to the semi finals, where Harrison and Amelia prevailed and earned their place in the final center court match with Superintendent Cardillo and Principal Dr. Dean Schlanger.
The audience cheered while the DJ played the theme song from Rocky as Master of Ceremonies Dr. David Dorman provided colorful commentary of the final match. Superintendent Charlie Cardillo and partner Harrison DiGia won the final match, 6-2 against Secondary Principal Dr. Dean Schlanger and his partner Amelia Conner. The event concluded with handshakes and a trophy presentation.
