MHS Marching Band Sweeps Its Division in First Competition

The Manhasset High School Marching Band and Color Guard, took first place on Saturday with their eagerly awaited, debut performance of the music from West Side Story. The first competition of the season was held at Pequannock High School in New Jersey and hosted over 20 bands from the New York and New Jersey area.

Manhasset clinched all the awards in its division including, Best in Group, Best Color Guard, Best Percussion, Best Music, Best Visual and Best Overall Effect and beat its previous first competion point total by over 7 points!

Under the direction of Randy Knudsen, Sandra Baskin and David Vanboxel and with Drum Major, Kyle Larson, the band has put in hours of practice learning the music and drill, and with this just the beginning of the fall 2009 season, they look forward to much future success. Six more competitions remain, including two locally; the New York State Championships in Uniondale, Sunday, Oct. 18, and the Hofstra Newsday Festival, Wednesday, Oct. 21.
