After a summer break, the Manhasset Men’s Softball League continued with its fall schedule on Sunday, Sept. 13.With several days of rain preceding game day, the lower field at the high school was unplayable.
Through the courtesy of Manhasset Soccer, the game was moved to Munsey Park where the Bulldogs split a doubleheader with the Sambucas. On the FieldTurf upper field at the high school, the conditions were impeccable and the Wallbangers split a double header with the Mid Life Crisis.
Sunday, Sept. 20, was the fourth consecutive day of beautiful weather in Manhasset. The league played all of its games at the high school. The Sportsmen took two from the MLC on the upper field. The front-running Sambucas took two from the Wallbangers on the lower field. The last game was a rousing come-from-behind victory for the ‘Bucas. The ‘Bangers were up 2-0 for most of the game. The ‘Bucas rallied back to pull ahead 4-2. In the final inning, the ‘Bangers scored a run and had the tying run at third before being retired by a great catch in left field of Manager Rich Masterson’s sharply hit liner.
The Sambucas, at 15-5, have a commanding lead in first place. The Sportsmen (9-7) are running a distant second. The other three clubs are closely packed near the cellar.
Two new players were welcomed and assigned to the MLC for the day. They will continue to have ad hoc assignments before permanent assignment to a club later in the season.
