Manhasset Rebels Defeat Tigers

Last year, the Auburndale/Bayside Tigers defeated the Manhasset Rebels, 2-1, in the Arch Capital Group Cup final. Manhasset returned the favor this year in the ENY Upper 90 Cup final on June 2 at Stringham Park in LaGrange by defeating Auburndale/Bayside by the same 2-1 score.

During the postgame celebration, the coaches of the friendly rivals, miles apart in the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), considered having the rubber match next year—maybe in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) State Open Cup final?

In this year’s championship game, Caitlyn McNamara and Samantha McCormack scored Manhasset’s goals while Rebels’ keeper Daniella Ford was named Player of the Match.

“I think that we were just the more consistent of the two teams today,” said Manhasset coach Mark Ferraris.

Auburndale/Bayside received the Howard Rubenstein Sportsmanship Award as selected by the match referees. Now retired, Rubenstein was seemingly involved in every facet of New York soccer for decades and is a member of the Halls of Fame of Eastern New York, the US Amateur Soccer Association, and the Long Island Junior Soccer League.

With more than 120,000 youth soccer players and more than 25,000 volunteers, the nonprofit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) promotes the sport for children between 5 and 19 years old, and encourages the healthy development of players, coaches, referees, and administrators.
