Alex Leondis, a member of the U14 Dix Hills Thunder boys soccer team, earned the right to play for the 2009 US Youth Soccer National Championship in Lancaster, MA during the week of July 21-26.
The Thunder placed third out of 10,000 teams in the country and is considered one of the most successful boys team in the history of Long Island boys youth soccer. The team is comprised of players from New York City, Nassau and Suffolk counties. They play an average of 85 games per season, train year round (in all weather conditions) and travel across the nation to play the most competitive soccer in the country. The Thunder has won four New York State Cups, two Region 1 titles and a berth to the U.S. Nationals. In addition, they have just been accepted into the U.S. National League, which is comprised of the top eight teams in the USA. The schedule will take them to play games in Las Vega, Orlando and Raleigh.
Leondis, who will enter Manhasset High School as a ninth grader, is the starting right defender for the Thunder. He is a very versatile, skilled player who also can play multiple positions when needed. He is an integral part of the Thunder defense and has been also counted upon to take many penalty kicks for the team. In addition to playing for Dix Hills, Leondis has been a member of the New York State ODP team for four years. He has also been invited to attend US Club Soccer’s National ID 2 camp in 2008. We wish Alex the best of luck in the future and look forward to watching him play for Manhasset High School over the next four years.
