Record Setting Day Leads to Runner-Up Finish

On Saturday, February 4, the Manhasset Boys Swim Team competed in Nassau County’s Division C Championships. The Indians were ranked third of eight teams in Division C behind perennial powers Garden City and Long Beach.  In any other season, the Indians would be trying their best to hold their third place spot. However, after a remarkable dual meet season, the MHS team set its sight on the unthinkable upset. To compete and beat either team would put this Manhasset team in uncharted waters.

In the meet’s opening event, 200 yd Medley Relay, The Manhasset team of Ed Ma, Andrew Chin, Damien Quinn and Justin Kim set a new school record, shattering the previous record of 1:46.34 (2011 Ed Ma, Andrew Chin, Damien Quinn, Billy Stathis) by swimming a record time 1:43.69. The relay team finished second and earned All-Division honors.

Earlier in the week Manhasset’s divers Peter Magliulo (Division Champ), Chris Carrozzo (All-Division) and Ryan Delaney finished first, third and fifth to give the Indians a 40 + point lead.

The Indians continued to surprise the swimming community, by holding a narrow lead into the ninth event, 200 Free Relay.

Manhasset’s relay team of Andrew Chin, Damien Quinn, Justin Kim and Alec Huang pulled off the upset, winning the race and setting a new school in the process. The relay quartet swam a record time of 1:33.25 to give the Indians their first Division Relay Crown in a decade. Max Smitham, Brian Tam, Paul Faglione and Stephen Cobos held the previous school record, of 1:33.86 (2009).

In the end, Manhasset would fall short of a Division Crown as Garden City took the lead after the 100 yd Backstroke. However, the Indians would hold off Long Beach to finish second and earn the runner-up spot.

Congratulations 2012 Division C Runner-Up!
