MHS Crew Team Puts Oars to the Test at Head of the Schuylkill

A week after competing in the world’s largest regatta in Boston, Manhasset’s crew team traveled to Philadelphia to race in the 41st annual Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. This 2.5-mile head race along the scenic Schuylkill River is a two-day event that included approximately 5,800 rowers competing in more than 1,300 boats from 23 different states as well as from England, Canada and Australia.

With a weekend that started with a raw first day of racing that included freezing temperatures, sleet and snow, thankfully the wintry weather passed overnight and Sunday provided a clear day for the high school races.

Manhasset’s Mens High School Four with Cox (under 17) captured a Gold Medal, placing first out of 23 boats. Competing in this event for Manhasset were Damien Quinn, Alan Delaney, Tom Kuehn, Tom Quaranta, and Jordan Kostoulas (coxswain).

Head Coach Hugo Guardado-Henriquez noted that, “Of the 11 Manhasset boats that raced in this competitive regatta, most finished in the top 25 percent in their event. A special shout out goes to the Mens HS Four on their 1st place finish. The entire coaching staff was very pleased with Manhasset’s strong showing overall and the depth of the team’s performance in this contest at both the Varsity and Novice levels.”

In addition to the Under 17 Mens HS Four, Manhasset’s racing results were:

Mens HS Four with Cox (Under 19): 6th out of 39
Womens HS Four with Cox (Under 19): 5th out of 44
Womens HS Four with Cox (Under 17): 6th out of 26
