The Manhasset Boys Varsity Cross Country team ran to a convincing victory this past weekend at Bethpage State Park to win their fourth consecutive Conference III Championship. The Indians braved cold temperatures and poor course conditions to score 32 points, finishing ahead of squads from Hewlett (58) and Lynbrook (106).
Leading the way was junior captain Stephen Bourguet, who took home the individual title in 16:52. He was followed by senior captain Charlie Morris who took second in 17:09. Mark Chouryguin turned in his best performance of the season to take sixth place in 18:03, while Matt Weilep ran an impressive 18:14 to finish right behind him in seventh place. All four young men earned All-Conference honors for their outstanding performances. Freshman Carter Paterson (19:00), narrowly missed All-Conference honors finishing in 17th place, as Stephen Tranchina (19:09) and Tommy Fruhauf (19:33) finished 19th and 25th, respectively, to complete the Indian attack.
The Junior Varsity race proved that the team has tremendous depth behind its Varsity squad, as they too claimed victory in their competition against teams from both Conference III and IV. Manhasset scored 30 points, finishing ahead of North Shore (60) and Oyster Bay (76). Donald Spampinato was the individual winner, running a personal best of 19:11 to lead the team. He was followed by John Marcucci (5th), Brad Spilka (7th), Jeff Nan (8th), Matt Ferrone (10th), Kyle Bentley (15th) and Matthew Wilshere (16th).
With the Conference season now behind them, the team will set its sights on the County Championships next Saturday afternoon. The boys will return to Bethpage State Park to compete for an opportunity to represent Manhasset and Section VIII at the NYSPHAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 12 in Vernon-Verona, NY.
