Saint Mary’s High School Alumni Association will host the 17th Annual Don Monti Memorial Golf Classic and Fall Alumni Dinner on Thursday, Sept. 24 at Plandome Country Club.
Once a year, local residents tee up together to be “Champions for Children” by participating in Child Care Council of Nassau’s Golf Classic. This year’s event is set for Sept. 24, at The Seawane Club in Hewlett Harbor. The Golf Classic will be the Council’s only fundraising event this year, making it even more critical to the agency’s success. Alex Leondis, a member of the U14 Dix Hills Thunder boys soccer team, earned the right to play for the 2009 US Youth Soccer National Championship in Lancaster, MA during the week of July 21-26.
Three Manhasset Crew Team members, Joe Calderone, Elizabeth Henry and Nick Kavourias, were recently honored by top National and State Rowing organizations. Joe Calderone and Elizabeth Henry were named by the New York State Scholastic Rowing Association as the 2009 All State Athletes of the Year. Nick Kavourias was selected to participate in the 2009 Junior Men’s National Team Selection Camp.

The annual SCO Family of Services Peter Speranza 5K Run to Help the Children is celebrating its 20th year on Saturday, Sept. 5, in Sea Cliff. This 5K race benefits the developmentally disabled and physically challenged children whose lives have been significantly changed with SCO’s help.
It seems that match racing is making a big splash this season on the east coast and elsewhere. While most people are familiar with fleet racing, where all boats in a division gather at the starting line and wait for the starting signal, match racing is a bit different.
