Winning lacrosse teams in Manhasset are nothing new. But when the team represents St. Mary’s High School, then that’s a little bit of a twist. After Catholic League dominance in the ’70’s and ’80s, the St. Mary’s High School lacrosse program has fallen on harder times. The enrollment shifted away from traditional hotbeds of lacrosse and its competitors got bigger and stronger. Considered a “small school,” St. Mary’s was faced with the daunting task of playing against powerhouses who had more boys trying out than were in an entire class at St. Mary’s.
The Manhasset High School Crew Team made their spring season debut with a strong performance at the two-day Saratoga Invitational in late April.
The Boys and Girls Varsity and Novice teams competed on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, NY against some of the fastest high school and club crew teams from the Eastern seaboard.
Buckley Country Day School is proud to announce that seventh grader Riley Denihan of Manhasset won the New York Region “Soccer Unites the World” Draw the Ball contest. The competition was sponsored by both Adidas and Modell’s to coincide with the World Soccer Cup being hosted for the first time on the continent of Africa, by South Africa, from June 11 through July 11.
The MHS varsity boys’ tennis team currently enjoys a 6-3 record and is in third place in conference IIA. At this pace, they will earn a play-off spot for the first time in several years.
Manhasset Varsity Boys Track team started their 2010 season with a 6-1 league record – outrunning Hewlett, West Hempstead, Sewanhaka, North Shore, Valley Stream South, Bethpage and losing to No. 2 ranked (Long Island) Westbury.
It was an exciting day on Saturday, May 1, as the Manhasset Indians went up against their oldest rivals, the Garden City Trojans. This is the longest uninterrupted high school lacrosse rivalry in the United States, and Saturday’s game marked the 119th game played.
The Manhasset Indians met their match last Tuesday as they came face-to-face with Chaminade High School and Darien High School. It was a week of remembrance and honor out on the field as these teams played not only with hopes of coming out on top, but also to honor Sergeant James J. Regan Jr. and other fallen heroes.
The Court of Champions 2010 Summer Youth Tennis Camp will be expanded to two sessions this year due to overwhelming popularity and support for last summer’s first annual Youth Tennis Camp. Session I will be Monday, June 28 through Thursday, July 1. Session II will be held Tuesday, July 6 through Friday, July 9.
On April 25, Manhasset residents Jordyn Mannino and Alexis Stern will be competing in the Junior Olympic Gymnastics, Region VI All-Star Championships. Both girls were victorious in the Level 8 New York State Gymnastics Championships on March 28. Of the 240 gymnasts, from 47 different gyms throughout New York State, only the top scorers advanced to the regional championship. They will be competing against accomplished gymnasts from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York.
