Manhasset High School freshman Michael Gabriel was recently accepted to the Juilliard School Pre-College Program as a double bass player. The highly competitive program, which runs all-day Saturdays from September to June, has recitals throughout the year.
This summer, Gabriel will perform with adult musicians in the Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra at four concerts. Last summer at 14, he also played four concerts with them and was the youngest performer in their orchestra.
The bassist has not only played at two concerts at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center with the Children’s Orchestra Society under conductor Michael Dadap, but has also performed at the Tilles Center, at NYSSMA, and at charitable events, such as a recent concert for Sandy Hook at John Jay College.
Gabriel has been playing the double bass since fourth grade in Shelter Rock Elementary School. He currently studies privately with bass teacher Tomoya Aomori and is in the Chamber String Ensemble in Manhasset High School under the direction of Carolyn Shyr.
This summer, Gabriel will be performing with the Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Louis Panacciulli on July 24 at Valley Stream Village Green, July 26 at Mineola Park, July 31 at Plainview/Old Bethpage Park, and August 4 at Morgan Park in Glen Cove.
