St. Mary’s Elementary School Regional Science Olympiad

It’s a fantastic supplement to the school’s science curriculum. Sixteen students from Saint Mary’s Elementary School’s Science Olympiad Team competed in the annual regional Science Olympiad competition held on March 16 at Kellenberg Memorial High School. In total, 42 schools competed, three of which were Catholic elementary schools. St. Mary’s placed fifth of 42 teams and will compete on the State level on April 12 at Syracuse University.

The Science Olympiad is a national organization whose goals include bringing science to life and emphasizing the problem-solving aspects of science and the understanding of scientific concepts. It strives to create a technologically literate workforce and provides recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers.

St. Mary’s has competed in the Science Olympiad for the last 11 years. Preparation for the competition typically involves classroom time dedicated to the event, however this year students showed great dedication and team spirit because the significant preparation was done on their own time, as a club based program with their moderators. Their efforts, once again, showed great return with nine medals in various categories ranging from the “Rotor Egg Drop” to “Shock Value” and “Mystery Architecture.”

Congratulations to team members Maeve Anand, Calvin Bernic, Lauren Bernic, Kelia Broderick, Kristen Byrne, Jason Cuomo, Nicholas Heid, Tommy Keating, Cara Kurkjian, TJ Li, Tammy Ng, Charlotte Simone, Will Simone, Breana Stones, Kara Walsh, Peilong Yang and their moderators, Mrs. Portuese, Mrs. Merzbacher, Mrs. Donnelly and Mrs. Fligman for their stellar achievements.
