Manhasset’s Boys and Girls Crew Teams recently pitched in with some “spring cleaning” along the Town of North Hempstead Beach shoreline.
Under the direction of Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman and his administration, the team’s athletes not only picked up trash and debris, but also helped to restore the beach to a healthy ecological state by raking up the excessive amount of sea grass piled up due to Superstorm Sandy. If left untouched, this thick layer of grass would hinder the growth of the native plants that benefit the shoreline marshes and wetlands.
Town officials estimated that over 50 garbage bags of storm-related debris and waste were collected by the team’s volunteers over a four-hour period.
MHS Crew Team Head Coach Hugo Guardado-Henriquez noted that, “This was a fitting opportunity for our team to play a role in helping to keep Hempstead Harbor beautiful and preserve the environment as well.”
