Fitness Week was a great success thanks to the physical education staff, teachers, principals, SCA, CASA, and all the school and local libraries that sponsored another great week of fitness, health, nutrition, and wellness. The students worked hard on their Get Fit posters and worked all week on hydrating, eating healthy and making healthy choices regarding their activities and lifestyle. The students had a week of the Get Fit Home Activity Challenge where they had dance parties with their families, pull up contests, ping pong contests, and more. Get Fit Manhasset!
This year marks the 55th anniversary of Sports Night at Saint Mary’s High School, Manhasset. On Friday, March 8, alumnae from all generations returned to campus to remember their days on the blue or white teams, and to support the students who continue the tradition in 2013. A committee of alumnae from all over the country worked hard to create a fun and memorable celebration.
In conjunction with this historic anniversary, St. Mary’s High School announced the establishment of the “Sister Jeanne Drummond, IHM Memorial Scholarship” as a way to celebrate the achievements of all the great women and Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) who have taught at Saint Mary’s High School for over 60 years.
Terese Keogh of Manhasset High School has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2013” by the Harvard Club of Long Island.
“Our awards recognize people who transform the future,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, a board member of the Long Island Harvard Club. “Dedicated teachers like Mrs. Keogh expend unfathomable amounts of time and energy on our Long Island teens, day after day and year after year. Their efforts inspire students to dream dreams, to work to accomplish those dreams, and to think rigorously about what they want their future to be.”
According to the SCA’s Planet Manhasset, work has begun on its organic edible garden. On March 16, Planet Manhasset parent and student volunteers, physical education teacher Ms. McDonough, Junior Girl Scout Troop 500 and members of the Green Club began the first step of the process by weeding the gardens at both the elementary and the middle/high schools.
Three organic gardens will be installed for students to use as “outdoor classrooms.” A little snow did not deter the hard-working volunteers from spending the afternoon getting the gardens ready for planting.
