Remember the bumper stickers we used to see in September that said, “School’s Open. Please drive carefully?” At this time of year we need to also remember that school is out and so are the children! Manhasset’s children, anxious for some good weather and time to play outdoors are out and about. The children are riding bikes in their neighborhood, walking to and from town, playing with their friends and we all need to drive even more carefully with that in mind.
Parents of teens that drive might want to have a conversation with their children, making sure that they know to be mindful particularly in residential areas where children may be playing. College students are home and high school students now have more free time and will be behind the wheel more. As parents of new drivers, you cannot always be there to supervise so the best you can do is to make clear the expectations that they drive courteously and safely. Teens need to understand that it is not only for their personal safety that they drive slowly but also for the safety of others, especially young children.
