John W. Bjorkman, a long time resident of Manhasset, passed away on June 3, 2010. John, who was the son of Swedish immigrants, was born in Minneapolis, MN on Jan. 7, 1921. He was the first in his family to finish high school and went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota in 1942 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a WWII veteran who upon graduation from college joined the Army Air Corp., trained as a pilot and worked as an engineer developing and testing advanced bombardment equipment, bomber turrets and electronics. He also shuttled B-24s across the country. John continued his work in advanced military systems throughout his civilian career. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.
John was the husband of Theresa and the late Muriel. He was: loving father of Betty, John and Clare, and James Bjorkman; grandfather of six and great-grandfather of one; brother of Beverly Halvorson and brother-in-law of Marian T. Conroy; stepfather of Leonard and Karen, Sheila and Charles, and Timothy Bogner.
Services were held at St. Mary’s RC Church on Monday, June 6.
