Gennaro Faustino Parrella (known as Gene) died on Nov. 4, 2009 at the age of 86 following a long illness. He was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on Sept. 27, 1923 to Faustino and Consiglia Parrella. He married Florence E. Lechleider on Nov. 11, 1961, and had been a resident of Manhasset since 1966.
He attended Fordham University as a member of the Class of 1944, but graduated on an accelerated basis in December 1943 due to the war. Following graduation, he served in the 63rd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army during World War II and earned two battle stars for the Battle of the Rhineland and the Battle of Central Europe. After his discharge in 1946, he attended Columbia University School of Business and received an MBA degree in 1949. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1953, and worked at Price Waterhouse & Co. for nine years. He subsequently moved to internal audit management, working for several Wall Street investment banks, including The First Boston Corporation and Dillon, Read & Co. Inc., from which he retired in 1989.
The early part of his career in public accounting involved a number of assignments in Italy. He had grown up speaking Italian at home, as both his parents had emigrated from Italy. He remained an avid traveler all his life, and especially enjoyed visiting Europe and, in particular, his relatives in Italy. He had a lifelong keen interest in history, politics and current events, and could discuss at length and in depth a wide range of subjects. He read voraciously and in later years enjoyed watching history and travel programs on television. He also loved to recount the stories of his life, including those of his family and his early days in Poughkeepsie, his time overseas during the war and his travels.
The joy of his life, however, was his family. He always considered himself extremely blessed and fortunate, and was grateful for the gift of his wife, three children and four grandchildren. He delighted in holiday gatherings and family celebrations. His children’s and grandchildren’s joys and accomplishments were his own.
He is survived by Florence, his beloved wife of nearly 48 years; daughter Elizabeth; son Eugene, daughter-in-law Kristine and their children Laura, Matthew and Emma; and daughter Florence, son-in-law David Baron and their son David. He is also survived by his brothers Joseph and Raymond of Poughkeepsie, NY and his sister Assunta (Sue) Scimeca of Highland, NY. He was predeceased by his brother Pasquale (Pat).
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Father Allan Sikorski at the Church of Saint Mary in Manhasset on Nov. 7, 2009. Interment was at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Poughkeepsie, NY. A military funeral, honors ceremony, was conducted at the graveside by the U.S. Armed Forces.
