Obituary: Robert C. Canale

Robert C. Canale, a 50-year resident of Manhasset, died June 2, 2012 at the Tuttle Center at the Amsterdam, Port Washington. He was 86 years old. Born on June 2, 1926 in Brooklyn, he was a 1944 graduate of Xavier HS, and proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946. Upon graduation from Fordham University in 1950, he began his career in the pharmaceutical industry at Smith-Kline French. After 18 years, he transitioned into medical publishing, beginning with the Steven K. Herlitz organization, continuing on to Romaine Pierson Publishers, and then finally to Dominus Publishing where he culminated his distinguished career as one of the founding publishers of two journals: Primary Care & Cancer, and Oncology, which he helped shepherd through its first 15 years.

For 57 years he was the devoted husband of Charlotte, who died in 2008. He was the loving father of six children: Joan DeSantis of Stuart, FL, Robert J. Canale of Manhasset, Susan Wilhouski of Manhasset, MaryJane Mortimer of Bethesda, MD, David Canale of Southampton and Christine Amorosana of Manhasset. He was the adoring grandfather to 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his parents, Cesare and Marie Canale, and his brother Richard.

Actively involved in the Manhasset community, he served for many years on the board of the Mental Health Association of Nassau County and the United Fund of Manhasset. He served on the board of the Focus group at St. Mary’s Church, Manhasset, and the Focus bridge group, where he enjoyed many hours with friends over his newfound pastime. He was also a transport volunteer at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn. Bob was described by all as a true gentleman with old world charm, quick wit, and a smile for all. A man of strong character and integrity, he was a product of “The Greatest Generation.”

His life will be celebrated with a memorial mass on Saturday, June 23, at 11:15 at St. Mary’s Church, Manhasset. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Francis Hospital, 100 Port Washington Blvd,, Roslyn, NY 11576.
