Stella Mary Russo (nee Christina) passed away in her sleep on May 9, 2012 at the home of her daughter Carol Allen of Manhasset. She was 96 years old. Stella was born near Johnstown, PA. When she was 16, her father died in a coal mining accident and, as the oldest of eight siblings, she had to work to help support her family. As such, she came to Brooklyn to work as a nanny and housekeeper. After World War II, she married Antonio Russo and for over 50 years they lived in Laurelton, NY.
Stella was always a very energetic person. Since she never learned to drive a car, she walked everywhere and that, no doubt, kept her healthy. Even in her last days she would prepare her own meals and do household chores. She remained alert to her last days: balancing her own checkbook, listening to political discussions on the radio and, particularly, watching any show on television that featured dancing.
In addition to her daughter Carol Allen, she is survived by her son-in-law Thomas Allen; her three grandchildren, Christine Allen of Centreville, VA, William Allen of New York, NY and Katherine Allen of Manhasset; and, of course, her favorite dog Jewel. Additionally, she had a large extended family of nieces and nephews from the Detroit, MI area with whom she kept close contact and who will miss her greatly.
