Obituary: Donald H. Scott

On Nov. 4, 2010, Don Scott, 68, science teacher, track and cross country coach, passed away after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He taught science and coached at Manhasset High School for 42 years.

Coach Scott was honored Oct. 21 in celebration of his Cross Country Team’s 500th win.

His illustrious cross country and track career includes 1,295 wins in 1,376 meets, an estimable 94 percent winning record, and he holds the distinction of having the second most successful record of wins in the history of New York State public high school boys track coaches. His coaching style was informed by an abiding interest in developing young men of character through participation in athletic competition, and his gentle, patient guidance helped countless young men challenge their wall and break through to achieve their personal best.

Don Scott was born in Virginia during World War II on a large dairy farm, and graduated from college in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry. His first job was for the government at Edgewater Arsenal, in Maryland, in a Biological Warfare Research Laboratory with the idea of developing fatal germs for the Cold War. When a treaty was signed between the United States and Russia, the secret laboratory was closed.

In June 1968 Scott married his lovely wife Barbara in Manhasset and in the fall of 1968, was hired by Manhasset Schools to teach Biological Sciences.

In 1996, the school offered A.P. courses and Don Scott taught A.P. Biology and Honors Biology from 1996 until 2009.

In 1972 Scott began coaching in Manhasset. Since 1947 until now there have been only two coaches, Mr. Allan Dawson, 1947-1972, and Don Scott from 1972-2010.

Donald Houston Scott is survived by his wife Barbara of 44 years and by his son Donald. He is also survived by his sister Charlotte (Rhett) Sutherland; sisters-in-law Deborah Spinetta and Alice (Nicholas) Salerno, mother and father-in-law Yoland and Anthony Spinetta, and two nieces and three nephews.

Arrangements were made by Fairchild Sons Funeral Home in Manhasset. A Mass was celebrated Nov. 9 at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Manhasset. The funeral Mass culminated with a procession on secondary school grounds that circled the front of the school. It was a personal and moving moment for the Scott family, as high school students and staff lined the sidewalk, bidding a final goodbye to Coach Scott as the procession passed by.

Interment followed at the Locust Valley Cemetery. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Don Scott Memorial Fund at PO Box #1235, 28 Maple Place, Manhasset, NY 11030.
