Gleeful Squeals Greet Santa at the Park

It had to be one of the warmest Christmas Tree Lighting ceremonies in memory, and the crowd grew steadily on Dec. 4 until, as in years past, it spilled into the corners of the Mary Jane Davies Green. The Manhasset High School Brass Choir, under the direction of Randy Knudsen, provided a spirited background of seasonal songs.

Commissioner Bernard P. Rolston introduced the Rev. Jimmy Only, Congregational Church of Manhasset, who offered the invocation and blessing. Only requested all remember the soldiers in harms way in Iraq and Afghanistan and elsewhere. Commissioner Mark Sauvigne introduced Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman who said he was humbled to be there and honored to host the event. Kaiman pointed out the Christmas tree on the green was now 3 years old and growing, and would soon be lit simultaneously with the massive tree across the street on the grounds of Town Hall. He too expressed concern for our soldiers across the seas and wished everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah.

Other dignitaries present were Town Clerk Leslie Gross, Councilmen Fred Pollack and Tony Dwyer, Legislator Judi Bosworth and Manhasset School Superintendent Charlie Cardillo.

The event programs sat, forgotten, in a box somewhere, no doubt because the third Commissioner, Patricia Roberts, was in Florida and unavailable to oversee the tree lighting ceremony with her renowned attention to detail.

During the speeches the children had been lined up to the right of the gazebo excitedly awaiting their chance to climb the stairs and receive acknowledgment for having won first, second or third prize in the annual grade-level poster contest. This years theme was “A Season of Giving” submitted by Don Holden.” The grand prize winner was Kimberley Te, a sixth-grader at Shelter Rock Elementary School. Harvey Passes, Manhasset Chamber of Commerce, announced the poster award winners. Even those entries that did not win prizes can be seen in storefronts up and down Plandome Road creating a hometown holiday feeling.
