The Manhasset community came together last Wednesday to remember those who lost their lives on that tragic Sept. 11 twelve years ago. The Manhasset Clergy Association hosted a Candlelight Memorial Service at the Mary Jane Davies Park on Plandome Road. The annual rite has become a familiar scene, with the town meeting to honor those who are missed so dearly. The local Boy Scout troops handed out candles, adding to the spirit of evening. Some came with their own candles; others with lanterns.
It was a touching moment as the clergy proceeded with the annual ceremony: candles glowing, firefighters in their Class A uniforms, and a large American flag proudly lit, hanging high from Manhasset-Lakeville fire truck ladders. The Manhasset High School Ensemble sang patriotic songs. Friends and family members had a chance to remember their loved ones by sharing their names with the group.
It will always be a difficult task, but it is an unfortunate tradition that tells our little corner of the world that we will always remember.
