Aaron Mitchem Returns Home A Top Naval Officer

Manhasset Grad Promoted to Chief Master of Arms

Sesebo, Japan is a long way from Roslyn. But it was there, at a U.S. Navy base, that Roslyn native Aaron L. Mitchem III was recently commissioned as a Chief Master-At-Arms in Surface Warfare.

The event took place last April 15 and is the culmination of a career that began when Mitchem graduated from Manhasset High School in 1998.

During his career in the Navy, Chief Mitchem has received numerous awards, including the Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achieve- ment Medal with three gold stars, Global War on Terrorism Medal, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.

Boys Varsity Tennis Team Wins Conference II Championship

After winning the Conference II Championship, the Manhasset Boys Varsity Tennis Team happily displayed the #1 victory sign for a momentous occasion. This is the first conference title for the team since 2003.  They are extremely proud of their victory and rightly so! ‘Who Is the Street Fair For?’

“Where are you from?”

“Russia.”

“No. No. What town?”

“Queens.”

Similar exchanges happened several times, people offering a foreign country of origin rather than their local town, as they strolled along Plandome Road enjoying a gorgeous day at the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce’s Second Annual Street Fair on Saturday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Manhasset was very well represented at the fair but there was also a wide variety of visitors—from Bayside, Farmingdale, Great Neck, Brooklyn, Jericho, NYC, Westbury, Roslyn, and Oceanside, to name a few. One couple from Great Neck saw a sign on Northern Boulevard and made plans to meet friends at the fair. A family strolling leisurely along traveled from Jericho, saying, “It’s just nice to get out of your own town a little bit.”

Raising a Glass to ‘Adventures In Learning’ at Wine Tasting

Some families on the North Shore need some help after school. Many hard-working parents cannot be home at 3 p.m., so they need a place where they can trust that their kids are not only being taken care of, but also getting their homework done.

Fortunately for some Manhasset area families, there is Adventures In Learning, an after school program serving local elementary students in need for 42 years and running. At Adventures In Learning, or AIL, kids are bused directly from school to a safe, nurturing environment where trained teachers and caring staff provide a healthy snack, give one-on-one help with homework and then engage the students in fun and educational activities like dance, science, sports, art, music and Scouting.

Memorial Day Weekend 2011

American Legion Manhasset Post 304 proclaimed the theme of this year’s parade “We Salute Our Armed Forces.” The three-day Memorial Day weekend began early Saturday morning with Legionnaires, Scouts and their parents flagging the veterans’ graves at the Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn. Boy Scout Troop 97, Cub Scout Pack 101, and Legionnaires placed American flags in front of each veteran’s grave. On Sunday morning, Legionnaires and Auxiliary Unit 304 attended the 10:30 a.m. religious service at the Church of St. Mary. The service was conducted by Msgr. John J. McCann with more than 50 Post and Auxiliary members in attendance. The Knights of Columbus Squires contributed by serving as ushers.

Rain at 9 a.m. forced an initial decision to cancel the parade. That decision was reversed when the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department reported an oncoming clearing seen on weather radar. A Nassau County Police Department motorcycle escorted the Memorial Day Parade as it began its rain-delayed start.

Best Friends Are Valedictorian and Salutatorian at St Mary’s Graduation

St. Mary’s Class of 2011 held graduation ceremonies Saturday, June 11, at the Tilles Center where both the salutatorian and valedictorian were Manhasset residents, best friends, star athletes, committed to volunteering and very active within the parish. Both young women also attended St. Mary’s Elementary School where they met and became fast friends—valedictorian Juliette de Venoge and salutatorian Olivia Evans—a remarkable pair indeed.

Mrs. Grace M. Cavallo, school president, offered, “Juliette and Olivia fully embody the mission and spirit of St. Mary’s High School.” Elaborating, she said, “their determination to be their best academically is complemented by their fellowship among their classmates. Whether in the classroom or on the field, Juliette and Olivia give testimony to the phrase “’be the best one can be’ but never forgetting to lend a helping hand to others in need.”

International Film Festival and

Street Fair on Plandome Road

The goal is to spruce up Plandome Road for residents and the influx of visitors expected to attend the Gold Coast International Film Festival June 1-5.

Business owners have been asked to set out colorful flowers in front of their stores on Plandome Road and residents can show appreciation for their efforts by shopping locally. Residents are encouraged to purchase their tickets online at www.goldcoastfilmfestival.org or purchase one of the three packages that are offered.

Nassau County Legislature Passes Redistricting Plan

GOP Plan Passes 10-8, Asks Judge in
Redistricting Lawsuit to Recuse Himself

Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt decided to mix things up at the special meeting of the Nassau County Legislature on Tuesday, May 24: Instead of adhering to the schedule, he decided to address the redistricting vote—the last item on the legislative calendar for that meeting- first. Angry Democratic legislators pointed out that the residents who had come to speak on the topic of authorizing financing for new projects in the Nassau Hub- the first item on the calendar- would have to wait several hours, and asked that the Hub item be called first, but Schmitt would not budge. As a result, it was nearly four hours before the Hub issue was called, after the legislature passed the redistricting plan 10-8.

Brooks, commander of the Manhasset Post 304, American Legion, and Matthew Falcone, parade chairman, have announced the Parade Order and schedule for the annual Manhasset Memorial Day Parade and for the attendant memorial services. All Manhasset residents, their families and friends are invited to join the Legion in this remembrance of the great sacrifices of these American heroes. The theme of the parade this year, “We Salute Our Armed Forces,” is a reminder that while Memorial Day honors all deceased veterans, we wish to remember our servicemen and women engaged halfway around the world in an effort to preserve our freedom and way of life from global terrorism.
