Lecture Series

Dr. Suzanne Vromen and her family lived in Belgium in 1940 when the Nazis invaded the country. Fortunately, they escaped and found refuge in the Belgian Congo. Active Seniors

Active Seniors of Manhasset meets every Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. in rented quarters at the Unitarian Church on Shelter Rock Rd. Phyllis Becker is its director and leads the group in its activities including luncheons at local restaurants. Bus transportation is available at one’s house. Call Mrs. Becker at 365-8493 to be included. Meetings are in a bright cheery room and desserts and beverage are offered. Bring your own sandwiches. Get up card groups for bridge and other games, bingo and board games. This is a chance to get out and make new friends and keep up with the old ones. The Brain Aneurysm Center at North Shore University Hospital holds a Brain Aneurysm Support group the second Tuesday of every month at NSUH’s 9th floor Tower conference room, 300 Community Dr., Entrance 3. Known as the “Circle of Friends,” the support group is open to all brain aneurysm patients, family members and friends. The group is led by social workers, registered nurses and a brain aneurysm coordinator. St. Mary’s Elementary School Ladies Night Out

St. Mary’s Elementary School holds Annual Ladies Night Out at North Hills Country Club from 6:30 to 11 p.m. The evening will feature a fashion show by Gallery Couture of Plandome Road, a vintage designer handbag auction, silent auction and shopping boutique with various vendors. Approaches for Treating for Autism, Panel Discussion

Manhasset SEPTA offers a free panel discussion with local experts on the various current approaches to treating children on the autistic spectrum. MP Garden Club Hosts Pulitzer Prize-Winning Writer

Irene Virag, whose popular gardening column appeared in Newsday for 14 years, speaks at 1 p.m. at the Manhasset Public Library. She’ll discuss the plants, people and places that inspired her stories and columns as well as her life. Irene was named a Great American Gardener by the American Horticultural Society last year and won the organization’s national communications award for inspirational garden writing. As a breast cancer survivor, Irene sees the garden as a metaphor for hope and renewal and found both in the organic flower and vegetable garden she nurtures in her front yard.

Rabbi Marvin Tokayer’s warm engaging smile has been a hallmark of his varied and distinguished career with the summer he spent s a comedian in the Borscht Belt, to his time as a chaplain in the US Air Force, to the 13 years he was Rabbi of the Jewish community in Japan. Throughly Modern Millie

Presented by Manhasset High School under the direction of Robb Fessler. Thoroughly Modern Millie is a high-spirited 1920’s musical romp that tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to New York City in search of a new life. The cast is filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a villainous dragon-lady audiences love to hate. Thoroughly Modern Millie brings madcap merriment, intrigue and jazz in a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Performances are Nov. 19, 20 and 21 at 8 p.m.; Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. A special preview for seniors will be held Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased after Nov. 9 at manhasset.k12.ny.us or in the high school lobby one hour prior to each performance. Gregory Mone, a 1994 graduate of Manhasset High School, will be speaking about his new book, The Truth About Santa: Wormholes, Robots, and What Really Happens on Christmas Eve, at 7 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 1542 Northern Blvd. The book is a humorous, detailed explanation of how St. Nick uses advanced science and technology to accomplish his seemingly impossible annual rounds. ThanksGiving Ball

Family & Children’s, one of LI’s largest human care agencies, is planning its annual ThanksGiving Ball at the Garden City Hotel on Nov. 19. This annual dinner dance raises much-needed funds for the agency whose mission is to care for Long Islanders in need. Designers’ Showcase ‘09

Mansions & Millionaires announces the Designers’ Showcase ’09 at historic La Selva mansion, 187 Oyster Bay Rd., Mill Neck. Built in 1915, by Hunt & Hunt, with grounds by the legendary Olmstead Bros., La Selva represents the unusual in the Italianate Mediterranean Style. The interior is brimming with details depicting many of the world’s masters in their field, columns carved with gargoyles and critters; iron work, vaulted ceiling, marble floors, a stone staircase that seems to float to the second floor, Renaissance paintings built into the walls, etc. On the exterior find, garden sculpture and artifacts, some from the 1st Century AD.
