America the Beautiful Exhibit

The Manhasset Public Library along with its Art Advisory Committee and Exhibitions Director Amy Finkston are pleased to announce a new exhibit “America the Beautiful” in the Community Room Art Gallery. “America the Beautiful” is a song of patriotism, and the exhibit shows our democracy. Through photographs of the country’s natural beauties and in paintings and mixed-media art, interpretations of what America means to each artist will be displayed. Smaller scale images on the theme continue on all levels of the library. The show coincides with the celebration of our 4th of July holiday, when many people go on vacation and travel our great land. Visitors will enjoy the exhibition while marveling at its diversity. The exhibit will run through Friday, August 2, at 30 Onderdonk Ave., Manhasset. Manhasset-Lakeville Water and Fire District Summer Schedule

The Board of Commissioners of the Manhasset-Lakeville Water and Fire District has a summer schedule of public official meetings. The board will meet Thursdays at 5 p.m. through September 5 to discuss the weekly business of the district. The regular meeting schedule will resume September 10. All meetings will be conducted in the boardroom at the district office, 170 East Shore Rd., Great Neck, unless other publicly notified. Regular office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The board is available daily to respond to concerns, questions, and issues of district residents pertaining to water or fire district matters. Weekly Events

• Womanspace, now in its 32nd year, meets weekly to discuss issues of interest and concern to women. New members are welcome. Wednesdays from 1-3 p.m. at the Great Neck Social Center, 80 Grace Ave., 516-487-0025.

• Stroke Support Group. North Shore University Hospital at Manhasset offers a free weekly support group for stroke survivors and caregivers every Friday from 10 a.m-1:30 p.m. at 300 Community Dr., Entrance 3, and Apt. Bldg. #304. Each meeting begins with a general social period from 10-11 a.m. From 11 a.m. to noon, guest speakers give presentations on a wide variety of topics. Lunch is from noon to 12:45 p.m. (bring your own lunch, beverages provided). From 12:50-1:30 p.m., physical therapy is provided for stroke survivors, and concurrently a separate caregiver’s-support group meeting is held. • Brain Tumor Support Group. This is an educational support group designed to help adults with brain tumors improve their quality of life and share their experiences. Look Good, Feel Better

• The American Cancer Society’s two-hour class for women undergoing treatment for cancer. It’s designed to help them deal with possible appearance-related side effects, such as hair loss and skin changes, while enhancing their self-image. The class is free. Preregistration required. • Nassau County Art Museum

The Nassau County Art Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and closed Mondays. The museum offers docent-led tours for individuals or families every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday at 2 p.m. Each tour can accommodate up to 20 people. No reservations are required, but spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The tours are free with paid admission. The museum also welcomes group tours from schools, camps, or other community groups. Reservations for these tours must be made in advance. For prices and information, call 516-484-9338.

• Sands-Willets House Tours

From May through October, the Sands-Willets House, circa 1735, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the headquarters of the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society, is open for guided tours of its 10 fully furnished rooms on the first and third Sunday of each month from 2-4 p.m. Also included is a tour of the 1600s Dutch barn. Tour hours are 2:15 and 3:15 p.m. An admission fee of $5 per adult and $2.50 for children under 12 helps the society maintain the house, its barn, and the grounds on which they stand. • Single Parent Network

Problems such as finances, child care, visitation schedules, grandparents, extended family, and demanding work schedules can overwhelm a single parent. The North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center, through the Single Parent Action Network, offers support services, workshops, and community meetings for single parents with children 18 years of age and younger. • Violence Hotline

The Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence is the service provider in Nassau County for the victims of domestic or dating violence, sexual assault, and elder abuse. The Coalition operates a fully staffed, 24-hour hotline at 516-542-0404. Counseling, safe housing, advocacy, and legal assistance are available in a warm, supportive, professional atmosphere. For women who are victims of violent behavior, safety is a major concern. Therefore, the coalition operates a safe home in Nassau County for battered women and their children. Advocates are also available Monday through Friday in Family Court and at Domestic Violence Court in Criminal Court and are on-call 24 hours a day for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in local hospital emergency rooms. • Support For The Widowed

AARP Widowed Persons Service in Nassau County offers emotional support, counseling, and other services to recently widowed men and women of all ages. The program is free of charge and open to all Nassau County residents. The service offers the help of trained volunteers, all of whom have been widowed themselves.
